Nylah has always had a passion for music, and her palette includes everyone from Rihanna to Elton John. Her love of music began in childhood, when she would listen to the radio while cleaning alongside her grandmother. She also fondly remembers watching music videos, and being so inspired to dance that she leapt up on crates to practice her moves. These moments shaped Nylah’s love for creativity and artistic expression. So, when Snow City Arts Teaching Artist Lenny introduced the drum machine to Nylah for the first time, it was the perfect pairing. Before long, she tapped into unrealized musical talents and created a Caribbean-influenced piece accompanied by Lenny on the ukulele — all from her hospital room.

Snow City Arts transforms each student’s hospital room into a space of creativity and joy, allowing students like Nylah to express their individuality, explore their interests, and forget about being sick for a while.

With your help, we can make sure hundreds of kids just like Nylah have the opportunity to go wherever their creative impulses lead whether it be on the hospital floors or virtually.

The shared moments between Nylah and Teaching Artists were about much more than completing a project. Nylah, who is now 19, was initially introduced to Snow City Arts at the age of 13. In fact, Nylah has worked with 6 of our 7 Teaching Artists and in addition to music, her sessions included poetry and digital art. Every invitation to participate in a workshop was also an opportunity to converse and connect with a friendly face. With Snow City Arts, Nylah was able to learn a breadth of new topics both related and unrelated to her project. This is exactly what we mean when we say our workshops are student led and student centered.

Your donation will have an impact on students just like Nylah and will be used to make sure future workshops remain accessible for every young person. Give today, and Snow City Arts will continue to nurture potential artists, life-time learners, and creative decision-makers amongst youth in hospitals. Let’s do this work together!
