Snow City Arts student Olivia first met Teaching Artist Monica Acosta when she was in the hospital, and Monica asked, “Would you like to make art today?” Olivia said yes, and her day got a little brighter. “When someone knocked on our door and asked if she wanted to do an art project, Olivia lit up, forgot she was in the hospital hooked up to wires and machines, and she just created art. It helped her escape for a little bit,” remembers her mom, Doreen.

Since that first workshop more than a year ago, Olivia has participated in several Snow City Arts workshops, in and out of the hospital. She has brought along her sister, Sophia, too. The two have attended Snow City Arts’ new virtual programs like Open Studio and Art Party, and created sculptures, drawings, paintings, and even a collaborative animation. With these programs, students like Olivia and Sophia can make art together, and with others, even after they leave the hospital.

“Three months ago, I got a Snow City package with crayons and clay and stuff, and I was just listening to music and drawing. I really loved how it turned out.” – Olivia, 10

“It’s very easy to make art over the computer, because if I’m on the airplane, if I’m in a car, if I’m even home and I’m sick, I can still do Snow City Arts” – Sophia, 9

For more than two decades, Snow City Arts has brightened the days of students like Olivia and Sophia, thanks to our Teaching Artists, our hospital partners, and you.

Every child, even if they are in the hospital or home sick, should have access to arts education. Indeed, Doreen reflects, “The way the Snow City Arts works with children outside of the hospital is such an asset to the community because so many children, like my children, have medical issues that limit their ability to connect and participate in activities

Your support provides the invaluable gift of arts education to hundreds of students in the hospital, and on the screen, each year. Will you consider supporting this work with a donation this year?
